Ditch and Switch

From washing my hair to putting on my make up, I use non-toxic products. It wasn’t a quick switch, but it was definitely a researched one! Because if you’re anything like me, you aren’t ditching your salon brand shampoo unless you have a good reason to! If you are also someone who needs to know all the facts and see it for yourself, I suggest — no, let me rephrase that, I’m telling you to download the Think Dirty app on your phone right now. Go ahead, this blog will still be here once you’re done.

Okay so now that you have that downloaded I want you to walk over to your cleaning supplies, grab your all-purpose cleaner, and scan it in the app. Did that number just blow your mind? Is it throwing up all the warning signs of an extremely chemical filled product? You know, that product you’re cleaning your butcher board with before you cut that fruit you’re about to eat…scary right? Now go around your house and finish scanning every bottle like I did and try not to freak out.

These are chemicals we are bringing into our homes because we think they are safe. Wake up call. They aren’t. A chemical filled lifestyle leads to so many horrible side effects and diseases…some incurable. I knew I  couldn’t throw out every single bottle in my house at the same time, but I knew that I could start somewhere. So I started with the dryer sheets and all-purpose cleaner.

Some of the most harmful ingredients in dryer sheets and liquid fabric softener alike include benzyl acetate (linked to pancreatic cancer), benzyl alcohol (an upper respiratory tract irritant), ethanol (linked to central nervous system disorders), limonene (a known carcinogen) and chloroform (a neurotoxin and carcinogen).

Yup. You read that right. That’s just from dryer sheets and liquid fabric softener. The second I read that fact I walked right downstairs to my dryer and threw away the Costco size box of Bounce dryer sheets I had sitting on top. I can’t rid my house of all chemicals right away but I can start with these damn dryer sheets that cause all sorts of fucked up things to our bodies.

Well now that I threw away the dryer sheets, I needed to replace them with something because static cling is real life. I jumped on Amazon and BOOM — wool dryer balls — with two-day Prime shipping for the win!

If you haven’t been able to tell yet, we are an essential oil loving kinda a bunch. We love our Young Living essential oils and we will talk about the amazing benefits until we are blue in the face. No shame here. WELL the coolest part about getting these wool dryer balls, you can add ANY oil you want on them to make your clothes smell however you want! I grabbed my Thieves essential oil, because if ya’ll haven’t heard about Thieves, you’re in for a treat. The Thieves blend kills 99.96% of bacteria. It dates back centuries to French Thieves who would rub this blend of clove, cinnamon, and other spices to protect themselves from the plague while robbing the sick. When they were caught they were offered a lesser sentence if they gave up the recipe, and that’s where the Thieves blend came from.

So on goes the Thieves oil and into the dryer the wool ball went. I haven’t used anything since and it’s been two years. Simple as that, and such a quick and easy fix for my very first ditch and switch!

My next ditch was my All Purpose cleaner. I used a bottle of this a month. I am a cleaning FREAK and I thought I was doing my family right by cleaning with this store bought cleaner. I was so wrong. I was just spreading more and more chemicals throughout the house. I heard about Young Living’s Thieves Household Cleaner.  I was told that I could clean my entire house from top to bottom with this ONE cleaner.

Don’t worry, I rolled my eyes too. There was no way that this cleaner was going to actually CLEAN everything in my house.

Guess what — it did.

Literally from my windows, to the bathroom — the kitchen counters to my HARDWOOD FLOORS! Yes ladies, my HARDWOOD FLOORS! All I did was take a 2 capfuls of the cleaner and put it in a 16oz glass spray bottle and cleaned my entire home. I was using ZERO chemicals so that meant I didn’t have to wear a gas mask as I cleaned the toilets. I also didn’t burn all of my nose hairs from the bleach or floor cleaners, which meant I could taste my food for the rest of the week. Praise Jesus! ALL of this with just ONE bottle of cleaner and it killed 99.96% of the bacteria floating around the house.

Many cleaning supplies or household products can irritate the eyes or throat, or cause headaches and other health problems, including cancer. Some products release dangerous chemicals, including volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Other harmful ingredients include ammonia and bleach.

Trust me when I say I did my research and I encourage everyone else to do that too. That’s why I had you download that Think Dirty app on your phone. You’re welcome.

Here is a fun experiment that was done about Thieves compared to other cleaning products. Sometimes you just have to see it for yourself to believe it.
