Chili Dogs & Ice Cream

Believe it or not, your resident Vegan here used to eat chili dogs and ice cream, a lot. And tons of other foods I wouldn’t dream of touching these days!

When I was younger, I worked primarily in the food & beverage industry, anywhere from the local chili dog and ice cream parlor to Walt Disney World®! I pretty much ate whatever I could get my hands on during those long and crazy shifts. For a while, that was OK, my metabolism was bumpin’ and I was always so busy and young at the time, everything seemed to work out! But it wasn’t working out, my body was completely out of whack, skin problems (that I am still battling-another time, another blog, friends) stomach aches, headaches and migraines, weight loss and gain, and many more issues! No fun. And now when I look back on how I treated this temple of mine, I feel sick!

But that’s OK, you live and learn! We are taught what society believes to be right, but then you find what is right for YOU and YOUR body!

Here are a few things that I have found that work for ME and my body!

Smoothies: I love a good smoothie in the morning, when I am on my A-game (which I am SO not lately due to the move, but getting back) I will have a smoothie every morning. My favorite? Spinach, frozen mango pieces, half of a frozen banana, water (or almond/coconut milk) and that’s it! I can usually make it last all morning by sipping on it! Tip-don’t chug your smoothies, no matter how delicious they may be! You’re just asking for a bloated stomach that may not be digesting well!

Meal Prep Veggies: As long as I have a bunch of cut-up veggies in the fridge and hummus, I’m set! If you keep good food in your fridge, you will eat good

food. Period. Set yourself up for success! My current favorite combo? Celery with this Hummus. YUM.

Ditch the dairy: I know, I know, cheese is delicious. I get it. But you’re not a calf, you don’t need cow milk. And you don’t NEED dairy. I’ll spare you my dairy rant.

Natural vs. Preservatives: Y’all I just feel 100% better if I am eating natural and whole foods versus the preservatives that are just too easy and convenient! Don’t get me wrong, I love me some chips, vegan mac n’ cheese, cashew ice cream, but I have to limit myself! Which goes to my next point…

 

BALANCE! OH do I know I am not a perfect eater, life is all about that balance baby! Enjoy that special meal that you know isn’t good for you, and the next morning, enjoy a green smoothie! img_0509Have your glass (or two) of your favorite wine, and then eat a crap-ton of veggies the next day. I have learned that trying to completely eliminate some indulgences just set me up for failure. Maybe that isn’t you! But oh boy, is that how I roll.

Take daily probiotics: and a GOOD one! Young Living has a great one called Life 9! We can help you get that too! But, I have been taking this probiotic daily due to my specific dietary choices!

A happy gut=a happy body!

Big one:Don’t let other people’s opinions and judgement deter you from being your best self! It happens ALL. THE. TIME. “You can’t eat that?” “So, can you eat chicken?” “Oh, she’s just a dirt eater.” “But what about eggs and fish?” “Where do you get your protein though?” “Don’t you miss cheese?” “Do you make Scott eat like that, too?” “You can only eat salads.” Let’s get something straight, I can eat whatever the hell I like. This is a CHOICE y’all. I am choosing to eat a gluten-free and plant-based diet. And I like it! So deal with whatever issues you have with that on your own time, k thanks.

And don’t get me started on what we hear when we talk about our beloved oils!
